AJAX is based on the following web standards:

AJAX is a technique facilitated by the above technologies for creating faster and more interactive web applications. AJAX embraces browser technologies and is independent of web server software.

When page requests of the server are required, AJAX uses asynchronous data transfer (HTTP requests) between the browser and the web server. These HTTP requests are facilitated by the JavaScript XMLHttpRequest object. This technique provides a direct connect between the client and the server allowing web pages to request only small required page parts from the server instead of whole pages.
